- Of course, we were originally discussing the clock speed. However, one
- does acknowledge that fact that the quality of a modem is determined by
- many factors one of which albeit very important is the clock speed. As
- far
- as the higher price, yes they sold/sell them at the higher price due to a
- perception that they have a better product. Not necessarily the case.
- They
- do make a good product but perhaps not any better. They have had
- numerous upgrades including the infamous "Death Spiral Syndrome" quoted
- in the Wall Street Journal. Not that other modems have not had problems
- but I have seen comments of "You get what you pay for". My perception is
- that this is totally distorted. The price has little bearing on the
- quality. Often
- the more expensive modems have had bigger problems ie: FlashROM upgrades.
- What I have found (I manufacture modems) is that the quality is a learned
- experience of the consumer and getting them to purchase the first unit is
- the
- key. Price is one way to get them to buy the first unit. Many people
- have
- been satisfied with U.S.Robotics and Hayes products in the past hence they
- pay more today. I don't agree that the product is better but perhaps old
- habits
- and learned perceptions are hard to change, but we are changing them.
- The AMQUEST HYPERMODEM is as good or better than most other products
- regardless of price or components.
- Thanks.
